Also known as the foggy city by the bay. I have visited San Francisco 3 times- September, October and November and I have yet to see the golden gate bridge! As you can see in the photos, the weather is lovely- but the thick fog seems to roll in and hang around the bridge all day.
Luckily there is so much more to see and do in San Francisco- China town for amazing food, Fisherman's Wharf for seal spotting, excellent shopping around Union Square or great op-shops and cafes on Valencia street. Our favourite activity was definitely the Alcatraz tour. We opted for the evening tour (which was so atmospheric- and cold!!) and I cant recommend this enough. It books out weeks in advance so be sure to secure your spot well in advance. Another highlight was the farmers markets at the ferry building- they had lots of food stalls (HIGHLY recommend the smoked salmon stall) loads of amazing fresh flowers, live music and friendly happy people enjoying their weekend by the harbour. Once you are inside the ferry building there are lots of little boutique type shops- including the cowgirl creamery cheese shop- you will never want to go back to supermarket cheese again! Do yourself a favour and grab a few to sample!
If you enjoy flea markets and antiques, the Alameda Flea Market is such an enjoyable day. It's held the first Sunday of every month and is best to get there by car- we hired one- public transport might be a bit tricky as its out of the way. It is the largest antique show in Northern California- you will be truly be in awe of the sheer size of it. Put aside at least half a day to see it (this will probably not even cover half the market). More info at: www.alamedapointantiquesfaire.com
San Francisco has a very laid back vibe- anything goes- and the people couldn't be more welcoming. I would really recommend staying a few nights and doing the scenic drive (on Hwy 1) from San Francisco to Los Angeles- this is such a beautiful drive and should be on everyone's list!
