They say smell is the biggest sensory trigger in your memory bank. When my husband and I enter the Oberoi Dubai we are instantly transported back to Bali- the Oberoi- where we had stayed two weeks prior. This chain of hotels keep everything as uniform as possible when it comes products they use- from the ylang-ylang fragrance that fills the air, to the bathmats, linen and marble that make up the bathroom. We have an instant sense of familiarity despite it being our first visit to this hotel, which is very comforting and soothing.
The Oberoi Dubai is a large high rise building in the business district of Dubai. The lobby is decorated with marble, large crystal chandeliers and splashes of colour. It is designed for the business traveller who still wants a touch of luxury. The large square rooftop pool is an inviting deep blue - unfortunately at a scorching 43 degrees (and feeling every degree of it!) and sitting in the direct sun for the majority of the day, it didn't get tested.
Mostly a red and gold colour scheme, the room has a very modern and bright feel. It is not something I would necessarily pick for my home, but it's a practical colour palette for a hotel room of this kind. The bed is extremely large, very comfortable and has different pillows to suit many tastes. One strange thing we notice is the TV sitting to the far side of the room- meaning we need to realign it towards ourselves in bed (we just LOVE watching TV in bed when we are travelling). We end up sitting on a weird angle and both of us agree it’s not a very practical position. The bathroom is gorgeous- cream marble, floor to ceiling glass walls (with sheer curtains & block out blinds- although we do witness a couple of unsuspecting guests!), his and her basins, a separate bath and shower, plenty of fluffy white towels, quality bath products and lots of counter space. The large double mirrors are very well lit (another thing that’s important to me- I hate walking out of a hotel and catching a glimpse of myself 3 shades darker than I should be!!). There is a separate small room for your luggage, which also houses a safety deposit box. All in all, a very comfortable room and nothing has been overlooked- well, with exception to TV position!
Outstanding. From the check in staff, porters, pool and restaurant staff- everyone was faultless. A special mention to the exceptional restaurant Manager who provided the most amazing service during our breakfast. He took genuine interest in us- not only helping with breakfast items, but also our travel plans and any feedback we had. At the end of the meal we were presented with a “bon voyage” cake as a parting gift. Such a nice touch.
Although we didn’t love Dubai itself as a holiday destination- it’s a perfect place for a stopover to Europe and the Oberoi hotel (once again) is perfect service and quality. I would have no hesitation in staying here again and recommending to anyone visiting the area. The food (breakfast and lunch) was absolutely top quality. Nine7One breakfast buffet is a must do- the fruit was some of sweetest we have eaten, delicious eggs made to order and specialty breads were all to die for. Our lunch was served poolside and was equally as good!
*We were made aware a new Oberoi Dubai property is in developmental stages, to be completed in 2015. This hotel will be more a "resort" style- catering more to families than business travellers.
