The Chase Hotel
PALM SPRINGS, CA
Walking distance from the main area of Palm Springs, this small hotel is named after a stray dog "Chase" who wandered in one day and never left. Set on a very pretty block of land, you are instantly transported back to the 50's when you step into the lobby. Shag pile cushions, Danish style furniture and starburst clocks feature throughout. The manager tells us upon check in this hotel featured on a "renovation rescue" type show in the USA, where they had a limited budget and time to makeover the area. They did a fantastic job. The gardens are dripping with fruit trees (lemons and oranges) and its a really relaxed vibe around the whole hotel. Homemade choc-chip cookies are served throughout the day- a welcome treat after 6 hours of driving and arriving late at night.
We choose the largest room with a separate lounge and kitchen area, as we got a really good deal. This room is extremely large and comfortable. The rooms have no retro theme which I expected after getting a taste for it in the lobby, they are just neutral tones and classic furniture. The bathroom was very sweet and the shower was great. The bed was big and comfortable and the kitchen area was very handy to store drinks.
Breakfast is included in the rate and is served in the small but well laid out breakfast room. Pastries and fruit, tea, coffee and juice are on offer. All the pastries in the USA are just so good. I dread to think of the fat involved, but when in Rome hey? This is the only meal they serve- there is no restaurant on site.
Very friendly and helpful- we got lots of advice about surrounding restaurants and drives. We actually ended up talking to the the lovely manager for over an hour one evening- he noticed from our reservation we came from Mosman NSW and he said it was one of his favourite spots in the world. A different gentleman was on the desk at check out, who was also very friendly and helped us with directions.
I can see why this rates so highly on tripadvisor. It ticks all the boxes in terms of price, location and amenities. The only thing that may improve this hotel is a cafe for some poolside or evening snacks. Otherwise faultless.
