If I had a spare $900 lying around, I would jump on a flight to Bangkok, go straight to Cafe Claire and place my order. 1 large cappuccino and a smoked salmon & egg bagel with cream cheese and capers. (In my hypothetical they are open, serving breakfast and have the best table available for me. And I look fresh as a daisy because I was upgraded- naturally). When finished, I would ask the waiter to kindly bring me another one of each. Yep, that's how good this coffee & bagel was. I still spend an awkward amount of time thinking about them actually. Lucky I took photos- I guess my next step would be getting them framed?
Rewind to May 21st, when Jase and I had 24 hours in Bangkok before catching out connecting flight to Paris. Our hotel was the amazing Oriental Residence (review here: http://www.outoftheoffice.com.au/oriental-residence-bangkok/) where the gorgeous little french style Cafe Claire is situated, attached to the hotel.
We have 2 meals at this property- dinner and breakfast- both are fantastic. Dinner included signature fruit cocktails, beer/wine and 2 Thai curries. We finish with a small but delicious baked alaska- something I haven't had in about 15 years- and it was just as good as I remember. For breakfast, we are given the option of buffet or a la carte, and we opt for the latter. Jase goes with the fluffy scrambled eggs, tomatoes, potato rosti, grilled asparagus and sour dough toast. And....I don't have to remind you what I have- THAT BAGEL.
I'm not sure if it was the combination of having an amazing sleep, being on holidays and being starving- but I can't ever remember such a simple meal being so satisfying. A fresh bagel, cream cheese, buttery eggs, salty salmon and peppery baby rocket. All washed down with my favourite coffee in the world- illy - which is a very strong, but not-at-all-bitter coffee. I guess when simple things are done perfectly, it just can't be beaten.
If you find yourself in Bangkok and want a romantic, intimate meal- or just a delicious breakfast- definitely consider Cafe Claire. And consider ordering......yep, you guessed it.
