With my diet well and truly out the window, we arrive at Angelina’s about 3.30pm on the coldest, rainiest day we had in Paris. We had battled lines at Notre Dame, been poked in the eye by fancy French umbrellas and taken 2 wrong turns before we finally arrive. To say I needed a hot chocolate was an understatement- and we were so lucky the line was no more than 5 minutes long – which is apparently unheard of!
The African hot chocolate is the most popular drink at Angelina’s- and boy oh boy, it lived up to the hype- I mean, just look at it! It’s a rich velvety chocolate concoction delivered with a small pot of cream (just in case there aren't enough calories in the hot chocolate alone). I plonk majority of the cream in (don’t judge) and slink down into my armchair, while the rain is pouring down and the line is growing longer by the minute. Yep, me and my frozen toes are in absolute heaven.
Jase orders a coffee and wanders over to the counter to select a cake- he settles on what he thinks is the healthiest option (hmmm)- which has fresh strawberries, chantilly cream, choux pastry and hazelnut crumble. We overheard the waiter saying the “Mont Blanc” is by far the most popular cake on the menu, but it sounds too rich for us (keeping in mind we are drinking liquified chocolate with clotted cream). The mont blanc consists of a meringue base, piled high with chestnut spaghetti strands and filled with whipped cream. I’m kind of kicking myself I didn’t try it now- à la prochaine!
The décor is very old fashioned- chandeliers, vintage studded arm chairs and waiters in traditional black and whites. It actually sets the tone perfectly for a fancy high tea in the middle of Paris. You want old world charm when you are spending $13 on a hot chocolate right? Right!
If possible, try and combine it with a visit to the Notre Dame as its in the same area. Be careful of what times you pick too- 3.30ish seemed good, but I've heard lunchtime lines can stretch up to 1+ hours. For the meantime, I hope the pictures give you a taste of the deliciousness we experienced! I'm still laughing at myself being shocked at the end of the holiday when I put on over 3 kilos. Looking back on these photos, I'm lucky it wasn't 13kgs. No, really.
